Rotarians set Day of Service
JONESBORO — The Rotary Club of Jonesboro is celebrating the holidays with its third annual Day of Service on Tuesday. The day of 12 different projects that can each be completed in about the same time as a regular club meeting is held instead of a traditional holiday party. In addition to club members, friends, families and co-workers are encouraged to join the club in service to others. “The project came about as a response to our members who wanted the opportunity to provide service above self with hands-on projects instead of the traditional holiday party,” Marilyn Hummelstein, chairwoman of the club’s Fellowship Committee, said. “Our members believe that providing service is why we joined Rotary, and providing several different types of projects and serving so many different people and needs is just a great way to start the holiday season.” This year’s projects include sorting food at the food bank, delivering meals, being a friendly face for shut-in seniors, cleaning the equipment closet at CityYouth Ministries, writing cards to military personnel, performing maintenance at Jonesboro Rotary Centennial Park, putting together information packets at the Hispanic Center, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army kettle drive, sorting clothes at a women’s clothes closet, donating blood, reading to elementary school children and assembling diaper bags and “Sleeping Baby” door hangers for new mothers. Members may sign up online using the club’s Web site. The Rotary Club of Jonesboro was chartered by Rotary International on Aug. 1, 1919, and was Jonesboro’s first service club. Membership includes 180 women and men who represent a cross section of businesses, organizations and professions. More information can be found at www.jonesbororotary.org. |
