Local dignitaries, and their parents, participate in ribbon-cutting ceremonies Wednesday at Fort Rotary, a Western-themed playground at Craighead Forest Park. Jonesboro’s three Rotary clubs pooled resources to pay most of the cost of the playground, which is designed for children ages 5-12.

JONESBORO — Could it be that a nice playground can be as much an economic development tool as other infrastructure?

Jonesboro’s parks director says there’s growing evidence that’s the case.

Speaking Wednesday at the dedication of Fort Rotary, a $350,000 playground at Craighead Forest Park, Jason Wilkie said:

“One of the things that researchers have said is that, in a mobile society where businesses can locate anywhere in the country and do business, that the sense of place is becoming more and more important. And what really contributes to the sense of place is the quality of life issue. And streets and fire and police, they are an important part of that, but I think when people think of quality of life, they think about, ‘What can I do after work? What kind of recreation, can I pursue my passion in my areas of interest? What are my kids going to do?’”

Wilkie said Fort Rotary, a Western-themed playground designed to appear like a miniature fort, is an example of this community’s quality of life.

“And projects like this — projects when you drive up to them and it’s a ‘Wow’ project — and that’s what this is and both of these parks are,” Wilkie said. “They add to that quality of life and that sense of place that’s going to attract business and professionals and workers to our community.” The parks director said Fort Rotary and Rotary Centennial Park, which opened in 2005, are more than just places to play.

Fort Rotary features typical play elements such as slides, ladders and climbers. An observation post with a periscope rises above ground level. It’s designed for children ages 5-12.

Rotary Club of Jonesboro, University Rotary and Jonesboro Metro Rotary have pledged more than $260,000 to the cost of the project. The remainder of the cost was covered by a state grant and the city’s general fund.

Jake Morse, speaking on behalf of the three clubs, said Fort Rotary is all about children and their families and providing a relaxing opportunity to spend time together.

“The playground will be enjoyed by children for years, hopefully decades, to come, and their families as well,” Morse said.
